Old Montana Prison
Deer Lodge, MT
Enter the walls of one of Montana’s most notorious—and most haunted—institutions.
The Old Montana Prison in Deer Lodge, Montana, operated from 1871 to 1979 and housed some of the state’s most dangerous criminals for over a century. Built when Montana was still a territory, the prison was known for its harsh conditions, overcrowding, and violent history. Inmates endured isolation cells, public hangings, riots, and brutal punishments—most notably the deadly 1959 prison riot, which left lasting scars on both the building and those within it.

Though the prison closed decades ago, many believe its former inmates never truly left.

The Old Montana Prison has become one of the most infamous paranormal locations in the state. Visitors and investigators report cell doors slamming on their own, unexplained footsteps, shadow figures, disembodied voices, and sudden drops in temperature. Some claim to hear whispers from empty cell blocks or feel overwhelming emotions of anger, fear, and despair. The solitary confinement area and execution sites are frequently cited as paranormal hot spots.
